Family Fall Portrait Session Availability

 We are all still playing in the hot sun, enjoying vacations and school breaks but it is time to reserve Family Fall and Holiday Portrait sessions.

Capturing family portraits is as important to your child when they are babies as it is when they are teenagers (though they may not show it ha). Documenting your child and your family will provide beautiful artwork for your walls today but also serve as a valuable heirloom for your grandchildren and beyond.

As ironic as it is, I am one of those mamas that really dislikes having her photo captured. But, a few times a year I commission a family portrait session so that I can well capture and document our family for my children. Would I like to be 25 pounds lighter? Of course. Would I like to wait until my daughter is better at listening, following directions and has a more predictable mood? Of course. But waiting just begets more waiting.

FAQ

What is the cost?

I offer two collections, Diamond and Essential, that work for family portrait sessions. Each offer an heirloom album and digital files. The number of images captured, the length of the session, the  size of the album and the number of digital files is dependent on the collection chosen. Please contact me so I can provide you our Investment and Information Guide.

Do you just provide a CD of the images?

I provide you a luxury service in which a wardrobe consultation is offered, a vetted photographing location is offered, and the highest quality of equipment, software and products are used under a fully legal business. You receive an educated, experienced portrait artist with an established and respected business. Brandy Goldenberg Photography is a registered business in the state of Iowa and one of seven studios that has been honored with accreditation by the BBB.

I will always believe in selling digital files for clients - if nothing more than for you to archive (in multiple locations - in home and off-site). My Diamond and Essentials Collections both offer digital files and they both offer an heirloom album with mounted pages printed with silk threads. A marriage of an heirloom album (something that will last and you'll be able to pass on) with modern (digital files that you share and use today but probably won't be passed on). What are the location options?

I have a couple of park-setting locations that I like to photograph at. They have been vetted for convenience, aesthetics/backdrop offered, foliage, and safety. I switch between the locations depending on weather, the time of year and the ages of the children I will be photographing. I also enjoy photographing in a city setting in which we use the city buildings, lights, and environment as our backdrop. I'll ask your preference when you reserve the session.

What should we wear?

In Iowa it is hard to judge if an October 11th date will be 95 degrees or 60 degrees. I recommend planning a wardrobe that will be friendly to both temperatures. If you dress a 2 year old in clothing appropriate for 90 degree temps and the day we photograph is 60 degrees there will be many unhappy images of a cold baby. Likewise, if you schedule an August date but want your family dressed in Fall-wear you will have one sweaty unhappy crew. Planning is important. You may need to have two outfits planned.

My general recommendation is to wear earth toned clothing and avoid neon or overly bright clothing. A neon or bright pink dress will flash pink onto the skin/face, for example. Clothing should compliment each other but does not need to be matchy. I recommend  NO MORE than one person wear a pattern, if any. For example, a little girl's dress may have a floral pattern OR dad's shirt may have a checkered pattern, but not both in the same portrait. Do make sure shoes match as they may show in the portrait.

Men are notorious for wearing too baggy of jeans. Moms are known to wear boxy sweaters (in effort to hide perceived problem areas). Both will equate to an unpolished image and may actually ADD pounds. Wear properly fitted clothing for your body shape. Allow me to pose, photograph and edit to help reduce any problem areas you feel you may have.

What type of poses do you capture?

Depending on the Collection chosen we will capture one or multiples of individual child poses, sibling poses, whole family poses, children with mom, children with dad, and a couples pose.

Can grandparents join?

Yes, for our Diamond Collection I would be delighted for grandparents to join at no additional cost.

Can other family members join?

I am happy to create a special collection for extended family portrait sessions. Simply send me a message with your needs.

What is Copyright and Copyright Infringement and THEFT?

Folks. Nothing gets me more red than finding one of my images has been stolen. Whether it was stolen by a complete stranger or stolen by a client. 

What is image theft? If you purchase a print of an image and then scan that print {reproduce it in any way} - that is theft. If you click the copy or save button on an image online and alter the image {ie: remove the watermark/logo} and repost it - that is copyright infringement and theft. 

This is a screenshot from my iphone and from my business page, your device and page may have different options. If you 'save photo' and share it as is - with my watermark intact - I don't get upset. If you 'save photo' and then alter the photo {remove my watermark} or crop/edit it and repost it - THEN I get upset because it becomes copyright infringement and THEFT. {my use of this image in example is purely out of convenience}.

So let's talk a little about copyright. Often I will receive inquiry emails asking if digital files come with the copyright. They do not. Sometimes for corporate work the copyright is sold and the price is steep. 

The copyright is essentially the legal soul of an image.  It is not given {or should not be if you value yourself as a photographer} lightly or cheaply. If I 'gave' copyright on images that would mean that I no longer own the image. It would mean that another person could say they created the image - they could manipulate it however they wish {edit it on their own} and they could profit off it if they desired {financially or in accolades}. 

I sometimes invest hours of work, and thousands of dollars go into creating every single image. Think about that. How would you feel if someone stole it from you?

The image may look 'simple' enough to you but the work, equipment, talent/education, and software that went into that image being created took time and it took a lot of money. 

When clients PURCHASE an image they are provided a use-release. This use-release allows them to share the image {on social media, in email, etc} and print the image for personal use. It does not allow them to alter the image or profit off the image. 

Even though it is easy to click the 'copy or save' button on your phone on an image or easy to scan a physical portrait - it is illegal - if you do not have permission or ownership.

I can't stress this enough. I post images on my business fb page all the time. They have my watermark/logo on them. I LOVE when clients, vendors, etc SHARE my image to their own pages or tag themselves in an image. I don't even mind if you use the image as your profile photo UNALTERED/UNCROPPED.

BUT THE MOMENT you click the COPY or SAVE button ... the moment you alter the image {say, recrop it and remove my watermark/logo} ... the moment you repost the image in that form ... YOU HAVE COMMITTED THEFT - COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. 

And typically I don't get too hot under the collar about all of this EXCEPT if you don't purchase the image. If you stole it from my business page and essentially remove all traces of 'me' - the image creator - it is theft.

Most of my sessions allow clients to select the images they wish to PURCHASE from a gallery of completed works. They then receive the high resolution, unwatermarked digital file and a USE-RELEASE for that image. The rest of the images that are unselected and unpurchased are either sent to trash or are archived. Some images I use as 'sneak peeks' before a client sees the full gallery. No one likes waiting weeks to see the fruit of their session. I love sneak peeks. I would really HATE to have to stop posting sneak peeks. Most photographers that sell files post session do NOT post sneaks for this very reason.

If you copy or save an image from my business page, alter it {say ... remove my watermark and maybe do some creative cropping}, and then repost it on your page {or print it - though the resolution will be awful and render a pretty yucky print} YOU commit copyright infringement. If you don't proceed forward after that and PURCHASE the file/image with me that is just downright theft. Legally.

Copyright Facts:

* Copyright is a property right. It extends to its author until 50 years after their death. 

* Just because you buy a print [or a photo - digital or print - contains your family] does not mean you have purchased the copyright.

* Under the Federal Copyright Act of 1976, photographs are protected by copyright from the moment of creation. 

* Unless you have permission from the photographer, you can't copy, distribute {no scanning and sending them to others}, publicly display {no putting them online}, or create derivative works from photographs.

* Professional photographers are dependent on their ability to control the reproduction of the photographs they create.

* It affects their income and the livelihood of their families [not to mention the sustainability of their businesses and the fees they must charge to remain sustainable with rampant theft].

* Even small levels of infringement - copying a photo without permission - can have a devastating impact on a photographer's business. 

* Copyright infringement - reproducing photos without permission - can result in civil and criminal penalties.

This last point is important to note. As a professional business I have a lawyer on retainer. It is an expense of "doing business" as a professional. It is figured into my Cost of Doing Business - which is then passed down to clients. The more I have to use my lawyer, the higher my rates become to work with me. I hate reporting copyright infringement but I will. I do it to protect my clients. I do it to protect my work. I do it to protect my business. 

WHEN IN DOUBT:

* Ask the artist/creator

* Do not crop

* Do not remove watermark/logo

* Don't want to abide by the above, do not use the image.

Before + After Portraits

Something that I rarely show are Before & After images {mostly because I just don't have time ha} but I know they are fun to view. 

Like most professional photographers I photograph in NEF or Raw format. This allows me to capture as much data as possible in order to have as much control as possible over every element of the image. You most likely photograph in a JPEG format. JPEG is great for every day candid home images. Photographing in JPEG tells your camera that it can choose what data to capture and how to process that data. This is NOT what you hire a professional to use. 

RAW/NEF format is not typically readable/viewable on your computer unless you have specific software intended to process RAW/NEF files. After I have processed every aspect of the image to create a portrait BGP-Style ... I export in JPEG and a wide range of programs can view it. 

I do a lot of composite images in the studio - mostly with swings. They start with my assistant holding the swing while I photograph it. Then we place the swing on a secure base and pose baby. My assistant's hands never leave my littlest clients. 

Later I merge those two or more images together to create my final vision. In the below swing image I then processed baby's skin {red-headed baby's are always on the magenta side and I wanted a warm portrait in the end}, light, highlights, shadows, color balance, add some texture, I added a water reflection just because, and do some chunky brush painting for my painterly style.

Of course the above image is a more dramatic edit and required a fairly time intensive investment but not all images in a gallery are so dramatically edited.

 {Before} - there were just a few things that needed processing in this image before adding my style to it ... like all raw/nef images they tend to come into camera on the dull side - this is so I can add the color and definition where I want it ... a few threads needed fixed, bonnet shaped a little, blanket fixed, facial blemish reduced, red-headed babies naturally are more blue/magenta skin toned so I warm it up a little. The Ingredients

As part of the full service experience we provide our clients at Brandy Goldenberg Photography  every session from Pregnancy to Newborn through the 1 Year Milestone is fully styled.

When I decided to open a professional photography studio my guiding threads were client-experience and quality. The experience we provide our clients is luxury. In order to do that, we have to start with a quality foundation.

The 'ingredients' that go into creating a single portrait are important to the outcome. So this post is for both the consumer who has no idea what goes into a single portrait {and why the investment in a quality professional is a vastly different experience than with a part-time hobbyist} as well as for the aspiring photographer who is ... well ... curious!

Without the proper ingredients the final outcome is often disappointing {the proper ingredients are determined by the experience and quality desired for a client as well as by the style of the photographer}. My style has evolved over the years with experience, education and following my creative dreams. I aesthetically style all of our sessions so that we can maintain consistency with color palette, design and texture. We provide everything necessary for a beautiful portrait experience {except baby of course}.

Aside from having a quality aesthetic foundation with  props, outfits, backdrops, and fabrics the most important tools for creating my art is my equipment.

I won't bore you with ALL of the details but here are some highlights: My camera {I typically photograph with Nikon D810 or D700 back-up} and I use an assortment of lenses depending on what the image calls for {most used are my Nikon 85mm 1.4 prime, Nikon 24-70 mm 2.8 or the Sigma Art 50mm 1.4}. For soft studio lighting I use PLM with an Alien Bee {soon to be Einstein} and I use a giant calibrated monitor to process and edit images in LightRoom and Adobe PS CC software {with multiple added plug-ins}. My painted portraiture is accomplished with Corel and my Walcom paint brush.

For Pregnancy Sessions, we have gowns, skirts, and tops that have been designed by prop artists specifically for maternity portraiture. They provide a romantic and soft aesthetic to art I create capturing a very special {and often once in a lifetime} experience.

For Baby Milestone Sessions, most of our props, outfits, bonnets and headbands are handmade and some are designer label. This continues the organic, soft aesthetic from the newborn portraiture and allows for sweet images that highlight baby, not the outfit.

For each session you can multiply what you see in one above image by 2-10, this gives you an idea of what goes into a gallery from a single session. Pretty crazy right?! Now image my storage dilemma in order to provide such a large diverse collection!

I only work with reputable artists and designers for my props, outfits, and fabrics. I think it is important to know where your ingredients come from and what quality you are receiving. All props are tested for safety before ever being used in a session. All props and fabrics are sanitized, washed or dry-cleaned after every use. And trust me ... my wash pile is pretty intense after a newborn session ha!

How Much ...

Those two words, how much, are sent to me at least 3 times a day. Often no other words are included. 

When I receive that message my first thought is ... for what? Of course, I don't respond with just those two words. 

I want to know you and your family. What experience do you want? Who do you want photographed? What memory or milestone do you want preserved? How can we build on this first session over the years? What do YOU want to invest in?

You have to know what you want.

The Life of a Mom & Photographer

I feel like I've been so MIA lately on social media! I have no idea where March through uh almost May have gone! 

In March my family visited NYC for a little Spring get-away. Whenever we travel to a nice location, I usually try to schedule a family portrait session with an amazing local photographer. In NYC, we worked with Michael Kormos Photography { check out their work then book a trip and reserve a session - you won't be disappointed }

I highly encourage all of my clients to do this. You won't hurt my feelings! I promise. What better way to document your adventures as a family than to have professional family portraits capturing not only the location that you are visiting but to provide a lasting memory? Every time you look at that family portrait it will remind you of everything you loved about your vacation. If you need a referral for NY, FL or Las Vegas let me know :-)

I know it is hard to often find even a LOCAL professional photographer let alone one in a city in which you might not know a single soul. My recommendation is virtually the same as when you search locally. Do not choose based on price. You'll almost always be disappointed. Choose based on style. Quality. Experience. Kormos Photography are a husband & wife team. For this session Michael was the lead photographer and his wife Sophie took complete charge of our kids. She made them laugh, she told them secrets, she made the experience PEACEFUL! And you all know what I'm talking about ... family portrait sessions are RARELY peaceful ha. But that is what we sought and that is what we financially invested in: a quality experience with an expert. Don't under-value or under-estimate the importance of the EXPERIENCE.

       

Any professional photographer you work with should have a style and that style includes a clothing color palette that they know works best with their style of portraiture, their editing style and the backgrounds they offer {be it in-studio or on-location}. Please don't ignore their suggestions on color and clothing style. Yes, these are your family portraits - so you shouldn't wear purple if you hate purple. But, if you haphazardly select your family's wardrobe and pay no attention to the details and suggestions the photographer is giving you about clothing & colors you will end up with lack-luster final images. Portraits, unless it is Fashion Photography specific, are about who your family is at THAT moment in time - their personality on THAT day - not about which neon color or floral pattern is trending {no matter how adorable ha}. 

After NYC - we went on our first Disney Cruise! We journeyed on the Disney Fantasy in the Caribbean. If you've never been on a Disney Cruise then I recommend the experience. If you want to go on a cruise WITHOUT kids - I still recommend the Disney cruise! They have adult only pools, decks, restaurants, and lounges. And since most people who go on a Disney cruise do so with kids - that means those areas are VERY quiet and less used. When docked at Disney's private island, Castaway Cay, there is also an adult only section beach!

The main pool areas are very crowded and often it looks like a can of sardines. I know. That was disappointing. But there is also basketball courts, a baby splash water park, mini golf, a water slide,and on-board activities. If you think you are going to relax by the pool with the kids while at sea - that is unlikely so don't go for THAT experience.  

The food is amazing - seriously, I was shocked. Not only was the buffet great with fresh options but the dining rotation between the three on-board restaurants was a treat with 3-4 course meal options every night. And free room service ... nightly Mickey ice cream bars big plus.

My favorite things: 6 flavors of unlimited self-serve ice cream {I still find myself missing those machines}, the Disney shows nightly, the adult/reservation restaurants, and Disney's private island: Castaway Cay. 

On board is a boutique for kids {mostly for little girls}. With a reservation your princess can be transformed with hair, make-up, nails, and dressed like her favorite princess. We did an Elsa dressing {which is why above my daughter has a blonde poof on her head}, a Mermaid dressing, and a basic Minnie dressing. My son did a Knight and a Captain dressing. 

Each passenger had a card and when you stood for photos they swiped the card in order to know which cabin/file to put the images. I think we ended up with over 100 photos. Each day the characters dressed differently {on pirate day they were dressed as pirates, for example} - so the kids had multiple photographs with each character over the days.

We definitely were not SO taken with the cruise experience that we booked our next cruise while on ship, as many die-hard cruisers did, but I would consider the experience again for sure. Disney's private island is amazing and I wish we could have had more than one port stop there but ultimately I'm a lay-on-the-beach kind of vacationer and would pick a beach house rental any day over a cruise.

With a weekend trip to the Omaha Zoo, karate lessons, swim lessons, soccer and a studio full of babies THAT pretty much sums up where I've been :-)

Parent Posing with Baby Declan

Declan was a dream baby! Every baby is beautiful and unique. Some babies like to curl up {as they were in the womb} and others have learned the joy of stretching out. We get sleepers that never open their eyes or even need a meal during a session and we have babies that are wide awake or easily awaken that want to eat every other pose.

Half of the joy with photographing newborns is learning who they are, what they like, and how we work with their personality to create a beautiful gallery of images.

No two galleries are the same. Because each newborn is going to have their own positions that they prefer - each body molds differently. 

I encourage parent + baby poses at every newborn session. I understand that often parents are tired and mom especially may be feeling completely outside of herself.

When my first was born I did not take any formal portraits with him. I completely regret this. I was tired. I hate having my own portrait captured {ha, I know}. So I declined when the photographer offered. 

With my second born I did have the photographer capture an image of my newly born girl in my arms. I didn't care for the image at the time. I'll be honest. But now, three years later ... it is one of my favorite images. It also still makes me deeply regret not having that same type of image with my boy.

I keep my parent images with baby very simple. Simple backdrop. I ask that you wear neutral solid clothing {black, grey, tan, or cream}. I try to pose in a flattering way, I reduce or remove skin imperfections, reduce dark circles, and in general help parents look their best even when they may not be feeling their best. 

The number of parent images and the different poses vary based on how comfortable baby is and how well they are posing in parents arms. Some babies sleep without moving, while others are a bit more awake and easily upset. But in general, I try to capture at least one of mom with baby, one of dad with baby, and then a family pose. 

So even if you hate having your portrait captured. Even if you are not feeling like you want images captured with your newborn at their session. Even if you think you'll hate the image after - and maybe you will {I hope not}. JUST DO IT. When you look back months and years later you will be so happy that you did. An image that you might have hated at the time can become the most treasured image you have. 

We have to remember that these images are not for us. They are for our children and their children and so forth. Documenting their life story is one of the greatest gifts you can give to your children. 

Newborn sessions are typically reserved by the 6th-7th month of pregnancy to ensure availability. Every session is thoughtfully planned and we only photograph one newborn a day - thus space is limited by month/due date.
