Adoption is very close to my heart as my own family was blessed with two beautiful children through the love and sacrifice of their biological families.
Kim and I had talked about adoption for a long time as she gathered information, researched and then moved forward with her husband, Wes, with building their family through adoption.
As a photographer that photographs a lot of maternity & newborn sessions, I have come to regret not having 'pre-adoption/expecting via adoption' portraits captured of my husband and I as we journeyed on our adoption path.
Although the 'bump' is a big part of maternity photography, for me it is more about capturing the excitement, love, and maybe a little anxiety that comes with expecting a child and becoming parents. Couples building their family through adoption have all those same emotions worthy of capturing.
And as a mama who has a 5 year old that likes to talk about when he was a baby and see photos - I know he would have loved seeing photos of me and his daddy as we were planning and preparing for him. Children, no matter how they come into your family, love hearing and seeing photos of their birth story.
I reached out to Kim to see if she and Wes would be interested in allowing me to photograph their 'expecting via adoption' milestone. Thankfully she said yes!
It was the first of its kind that I had photographed but it turned out beautifully. In adoption, you never know if your wait will be short or long {and whatever the wait - once that child is in your life - you couldn't imagine life without them}. Capturing the images early into their wait {or not even officially waiting yet} meant that it could be a long while before a child joined their family. Gus didn't keep us waiting too long ;-)
I was beyond thrilled when I received the news that Baby Gus had arrived!
